Tears of the Kingdom was initially planned for release in 2022 before being delayed to May 2023. A teaser was shown at E3 2019 with a full reveal at E3 2021. Its development was led by Nintendo's Entertainment Planning & Development (EPD) division, specifically Production Group Number 3, with Breath of the Wild director Hidemaro Fujibayashi and producer Eiji Aonuma reprising their roles. Tears of the Kingdom was conceived after ideas for Breath of the Wild downloadable content (DLC) had exceeded its scope. The player controls Link as he searches for Princess Zelda and fights to prevent the Demon King from destroying the world.
The sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017), Tears of the Kingdom retains aspects including the open world of Hyrule, which has been expanded to allow for more vertical exploration. The merchant Granté moves into Tarrey Town after it’s complete, and players can purchase replacements for rare armor and special equipment - including Breath of the Wild's Hylian Shield - from his shop. However, once Tarrey Town has been built, Link not only has access to a convenient shopping town and a free in, but one of the best vendors in the game will set up shop in town as well. Over the course of the quest, Link will have to recruit NPCs from each of Hyrule’s major cities to work in the town, and he’ll have to gather a total of 110 bundles of wood for construction as well. Finishing Tarrey Town is part of BOTW's longest side quest chain, and players are tasked with building an entire town from the ground up.
